In 2015, the United Nations outlined 17 Sustainable Goals (SDGs) in their 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a universal call to immediate action to protect the planet and improve human life for everyone, everywhere. The targets referred by the UN to be achieved cover ‘safe and affordable housing, affordable and sustainable transport system, inclusive and sustainable urbanization, protection of the world’s cultural and natural heritage, reduction of the adverse effects of natural disasters, reduction of the environmental impacts of cities and to provide access to safe and inclusive green and public spaces.’ EU Horizon 2020 programme for research and innovation points to several societal global challenges to a sustainable future including health, demographic change, food security, climate action and more. For the next decades, the transition to a sustainable future pose to people complex challenges with serious risks that involve informed and conscious decisions. Design, as a discipline, has the explicit power to drive societies as they are or to transform them. As an environmentally conscious agent of change, design assumes a committed attitude and an active role in encouraging ethical approaches; it applies sustainable thinking to look for innovative solutions and strategies to solve urgent ecological and social issues. Knowledge production in Design Research is ought to have a positive contribution to societies’ common path towards the 17 SDGs. From products to services and to systems, design has a far reaching scope of action to potentially improve human well-being within our planetary boundaries. This debate table aims to promote discussion around the demand for design for sustainable goals in collaboration with the audiovisual media to pursue ways of thinking and behaving in line with the contemporary challenges. Some questions, among many others, to trigger the writing of papers might be: – What is the role of audiovisual media to encourage a practice aligned with concerns about the future? – How do you network to get involved with the challenges above mentioned and to be part of the response?

– How are designers using audiovisual media as a communication tool to raise awareness towards a sustainable attitude?

– How can audiovisual media enhance design for sustainable goals?

– Do you know case studies to discuss within this topic? We invite researchers, designers, educators, students, activists, facilitators to contribute with a more theoretical or more practical perspective to enrich this debate.
